Saturday, 6/4

We walked across the Chain Bridge, from Pest to Buda, thinking we would ride the funicular up to the castle.
But the line was too long. We jumped on a tram, and went along the river to the Rudas Bath, which was built by the Turks in the Sixteenth century.

We soaked in all sorts of baths -  hot, cold, ice, fresh, salt, and mineral. We sat in the saunas and stream rooms, and figured out locker room practices. The biggest surprise is that you are give what appears to be a bed sheet instead of a terry cloth towel. It was a great time! Afterwards, we walked back to Pest over the Elizabeth Bridge. The Nazis blew up both bridges in 1945. Here's a statue of St. Gellert, who was thrown off the cliff by heathens, in 1046.
We had a burger at the Hard Rock, and watched some fine street performers.

We stopped back at our hotel to watch some tennis (Muguruza was fabulous). Next up was a famous, super-fancy place for dessert and coffee, the New York Cafe. Despite the name, it was thoroughly European, and really good.
Rebecca, waiting for her cake and coffee.
Fancy clock archway.
Fancy supports for fancy archway.
Looking straight up.
Then we walked up to the Franz Liszt National,Academy of Music for our concert.
The entry way.
Lobby.
Large hall, which we weren't in.
Smaller hall.
We heard the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra, and their guest artist, cellist Nobuo Furukawa, principal cellist of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony.  The program was wonderful. It began with a solo cello work by contemporary composer Myuzumi Toshiro, called Bungaku. It was athletic, evocative, and challenging.

Next up, one of my all time favorites, the Bartok Divertimento. Anima Musicae played the daylights out of it. It was simply fantastic!

After that, the night belonged to Astor Piazola, the Argentinian composer. We heard Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, Adios Nonino, and Libertango.

The performance was polished, yet exuberant. A truly great concert.
We finished the evening with a quick bite, outside, at a restaurant near the academy. And then home to bed.
